It has occurred to me to write these days because things are in such a sorry state. No one knows what it is like any more, day creaks after day no more painful than the preceding, and the general sensibility is such that Freischutz seems as moving, or as little moving, as Tristan. I used to read French poetry a good deal; things upset you if you’re sensitive.
